HELP NEEDED IN ARKANSAS! - February 18, 2009

The ice storm which hit the end of January caused massive damage in rural northern Arkansas.  Members of the Ash Flat Church of Christ have been running a relief effort for the past three weeks—sending out chain saw crews to help cut up fallen trees and limbs, offering shelter, distributing food and water to those without either.  Now they need relief.  There is a serious need for volunteers to help with the following:

--Chain saw crews.  One volunteer experienced in using a chain saw can keep up to four people busy cleaning up cut limbs.

--Counselors needed for traumatized storm victims.

--Bucket trucks with operators to help cut hanging branches from standing trees.

--Volunteers not physically able to go on work crews can help man phone lines, do assessments, help with delivery of food and water.

This is the fourth disaster to hit this area in the past 11 months.  “One volunteer could make a world of difference,” was the comment from a tired relief worker.  Could you be that one person?  Volunteers can be housed at the Ash Flat Church of Christ, 560 Ash Flat Dr., Ash Flat, AR 72513.  Meals will be provided, but it will be helpful if a donation can be made for food.  For more information, or if you can help these folks, please contact Greg Posey at 870-847-7554.

VOLUNTEER OPERATION WINDING DOWN - Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Hilltop Rescue volunteers spent the month of November working on the Bolivar Peninsula.  Conditions there are very bad.  The landscape is bleak.  Parts of the area look like a giant hand has come down and smashed all the buildings flat.  Part looks like that giant hand just swept everything away.  Other areas look like "normal" flood-damaged land--ruined homes with a bizarre variety of debris littering house and yard.  The water is not safe to drink.  Electricity is still out in many neighborhoods.  The only aid available on the peninsula has been at the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department, where three volunteers from other states have been giving out cooked meals, bottled water, and any other donated supplies on hand. They have spent time not only cooking and running the distribution center, but also sitting and talking with anyone who came in, letting people cry out their despair, and sometimes offering to help with clean up.  Mike and Eva 1 and Eva 2, thank you.  Thank you for the example you set for everyone who crossed your path.  Thank you for your servants' hearts.  Thank you for feeding the Hilltop Rescue volunteers hot lunches.  We will miss you as you pack up and leave for home.

WHAT'S HAPPENING? - Monday, November 10, 2008

Work was slowing down in the Houston/Galveston area--until last week.  Hilltop Rescue is partnering with the city of Galveston to help families on their list who need assistance with their homes.  We are also very likely partnering with the Port Bolivar Volunteer Department to get some help into Port Bolivar, which is in the remoter reaches of Galveston county.  Port Bolivar is an unincorporated community of about 1,200 and has as yet received no assistance from any outside agency.  The need there is great.  As plans to work with these two organizations finalize over the next few days, more information will be posted here.
