HURRICANE IKE UPDATE - DECEMBER 10, 2008

Hilltop Rescue volunteers spent the month of November working on the Bolivar Peninsula.  Conditions there are very bad.  The landscape is bleak.  Parts of the area look like a giant hand has come down and smashed all the buildings flat.  Part looks like that giant hand just swept everything away.  Other areas look like "normal" flood-damaged land--ruined homes with a bizarre variety of debris littering house and yard.  The water is not safe to drink.  Electricity is still out in many neighborhoods.  The only aid available on the peninsula has been at the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department, where three volunteers from other states have been giving out cooked meals, bottled water, and any other donated supplies on hand. They have spent time not only cooking and running the distribution center, but also sitting and talking with anyone who came in, letting people cry out their despair, and sometimes offering to help with clean up.  Mike and Eva 1 and Eva 2, thank you.  Thank you for the example you set for everyone who crossed your path.  Thank you for your servants' hearts.  Thank you for feeding the Hilltop Rescue volunteers hot lunches.  We will miss you as you pack up and leave for home.  The volunteer camp has been quiet for a few weeks.  In a few days we will be gearing up for another week of work.  We will be closed for Christmas.  If we get volunteers who have committed to come and serve between Christmas and January 2, we will work during that time and then close the camp.  God has truly blessed us with the people we have met and worked with over the past three months.  The Clear Lake church of Christ and the church staff have been amazing, and we have been privileged to partner with them.  To all of you who have worked side by side with us, cooked us meals, helped with paperwork, made donations, offered up prayers for this ministry . . . thank you.  May God bless you all for the love you have shown and the seeds you have planted.

WHAT'S HAPPENING? - Monday, November 10, 2008

Work was slowing down in the Houston/Galveston area--until last week.  Hilltop Rescue is partnering with the city of Galveston to help families on their list who need assistance with their homes.  We are also very likely partnering with the Port Bolivar Volunteer Department to get some help into Port Bolivar, which is in the remoter reaches of Galveston county.  Port Bolivar is an unincorporated community of about 1,200 and has as yet received no assistance from any outside agency.  The need there is great.  As plans to work with these two organizations finalize over the next few days, more information will be posted here.

HURRICANE IKE UPDATE - Saturday, September 27, 2008

Volunteer camps are now being set up at the Maplewood church of Christ in Sulphur, Louisiana and at the Clear Lake church of Christ in Houston, Texas. There is a clear need in both communities and these churches are eager and excited to reach out and help. We have never run volunteer camps in two locations before. We will need every willing pair of hands we can get. What can you do?

Sign up to volunteer on the Hilltop Rescue website. Get your tetanus shot updated. Make sure you have a pair of work boots--steel toed ones if you think it is at all possible you might work on a chain saw crew. There may be a lot of tree work this time. If you have another skill to share which does not involve mucking or tree work--for example, cooking or ministry--please note it in the comments section on the volunteer form.

Pray. Pray for all those affected by this storm, both the victims and the first responders. They will all have trauma with which they will have to cope. Pray that our disaster relief effort is effective. Pray for the safety of all disaster relief volunteers--safety as they work and as they travel.

Send money. We have received enough funds this past week to allow us to pay for gas to get our equipment to the camp site and to set up camp. We may run out of money to pay for food after a few weeks, but are stepping out in faith that God will provide. He always has.

Tell your friends, your co-workers, your church, your clubs. Ask them to go to our website or that of any organization reaching out to those hurt by Hurricane Ike and see what they can do. These are our neighbors and they need our help!

HURRICANE GUSTAV - Sunday, August 31, 2008

We are closely watching this storm to see where we can be of most help.  We are in prayer for all the residents of the Gulf coast who are reliving the nightmare of Hurricane Katrina.  Today we spoke with Rick and Evonne, who lost their home in that storm.  As they were packing to evacuate, Rick spoke of the disbelief and pain he and his family and neighbors felt, as if Katrina had just occurred yesterday and now it was happening again.  Hilltop Rescue leadership will be meeting daily to follow the storm and plan our response.  Stand by!
